Champions Leauge Group Stage Review

GROUP A
The surprise draw to the unfancied Bulgarian side leaves PSG unseeded for the last-16, a disastrous result that throws Unai Emery’s tenure in Paris into real doubt. He was brought in to replace Laurent Blanc to improve PSG’s performances in Europe, but this result is a genuine embarrassment for the French giants. They are now at risk of facing Barcelona, Napoli or Atletico Madrid in the last-16. Their current form abroad and at home - they are back in third in Ligue 1 - would suggest that they could certainly struggle.

Diego Costa levelled matters on the hour mark before Willian finished a lightening quick counter attack. Eden Hazard sealed all three points with another breakaway goal, before Sergio Aguero was sent off at the death for a wild lunge on David Luiz and Fernandinho followed after a clash with Cesc Fabregas.

The visitors came back from a goal down to secure an excellent victory over Pep Guardiola's side. This is the occasion when Chelsea made it clear that their title aspirations are authentic. They rode their luck at times – discounting the own goal from Gary Cahill – and their opponents were entitled to be aggrieved about some of the refereeing decisions. Yet nobody could question the endurance of Antonio Conte’s men, their competitive courage and the tactical acumen of their manager.

After a week in which Arsene Wenger insisted there was “no reason to panic”, there were brief moments where his Arsenal side looked close to meltdown on Sunday.
