Health Benefits of Avocados

Avocado is a fruit; technically, it’s actually a berry. Known also by the name of ‘Alligator Pear’ (a reference to its dark, rough outer skin), avocados are rich in healthy fats, and are popular in many cuisines all over the world. They have numerous health benefits, both as a food and as an addition to natural skincare products.

Avocados originate from Mexico, where they are part of traditional recipes (such as the ubiquitous guacamole) that are popular around the world for their deliciousness and health benefits. Avocado trees need tropical or subtropical temperatures to thrive, and so are also found in other parts of the world with such climates, including India and some African countries.

The avocado gets its name from the Latin American Nahuatl word ahuacatl meaning "testicle" an obvious reference to the shape of the fruit. Avocados are rich in vitamin B6, a vitamin that helps regulate our hormones.

When it comes to nutrition, avocados are in a class by themselves because of the unusually large number of benefits they offer - more than 20, last count. Loaded with fiber, one avocado contains 36% of the daily requirement of vitamin K, 30% of the folate, and 20% each of the daily requirements of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5, needed to break down carbohydrates), vitamin B6, vitamin C, and potassium - more than twice the potassium of a banana. Vitamin E, niacin, and riboflavin levels deserve honorable mention. Eaten with other foods, your body is better able to absorb the nutrients, such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein.

Avocados are very healthy! Avocado is one of the few fruits that will provide you with "good" fats. That means it can help keep your cholesterol levels already in the healthy range, and help lower your risk for heart disease. They contain healthy fats, which your body needs. Just be aware that they are usually high in calories, because they are fatty. Make sure you keep track of how much you consume; it can even be helpful to use avocado in place of less healthy fats, such as butter or margarine.

Avocados also contain a trio of heart healthy nutrients – vitamin E, a key antioxidant to help maintain healthy cells; potassium to help reduce high blood pressure and counteract the effect of salt, and beta sitosterol, a phytochemical which helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

It is well established that replacing saturated fats with unsaturated ones, such as monounsaturated helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, and a healthy circulation is necessary to supply nutrients and oxygen to all parts of your body, including to your sexual organs.

Avocados help to keep your eyes healthy. They contain carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which help to protect your eyes against cataracts, eye diseases related to age, and macular degeneration. Those conditions are often caused by free radicals that accumulate in the tissues of the eyes. The antioxidant activity of those special carotenoids neutralize the effects of those dangerous free radicals.

During pregnancy, morning sickness is very common. Avocados help to overcome nausea and queasiness during pregnancy since it contains vitamin B6, which is commonly connected to reducing nausea and vomiting.

Regular exercise, along with a healthy diet, is very important in weight management. Avocados are fruits that provide nutritional value to the body and support weight control. Findings of a recent study suggest a number of beneficial effects of avocado on weight management.

Athletes require a lot of energy and must maintain optimal nutrition to fuel their body. Avocado provides vital nutrients to athletes to maintain required energy levels and good health. Moreover, they contain phytochemicals that are a natural fuel source for your body.

With all the nutrients packed into this delicious fruit, there is no better time to chow down on them than for breakfast. With that said, you can easily pair them with other real foods that are vital for giving you the morning spark that will get you on the right track to a productive and healthy day. Though you can eat avocados for just about any occasion and time of day, as well as with anything. They are perfect to pair with anything that you can think of. However, you can’t forget about the potential that they have when eaten on their own, and as is.

In conclusion, do not be fooled by the healthy fats that are in avocados. They don’t make you gain weight but do the absolute opposite, and actually heighten your weight burning elements. The benefits of avocados to your heart, digestive system, waistline and appearance should hopefully help to make a place for them in your next shopping basket.
